Sawirada Daawo>>Washington, DC Metro Somali Community Event - In Support of the Somali Unity Government & to Condemn Violence & Radicalism

Washington, DC, June 28, 2009 - On Friday June 26, 2009 approximately two hundred concerned Somali-Americans in the Washington D.C metro came together to shed light on the plight of the Somali people, to call for an end the escalating violence and brutality, and call for immediate attention to the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. The event was organized by a coalition of Somali community organizations and members.

This event followed a similar event on 22 May 2009 by Somali women in the Washington D.C metro area. Among the many speakers at the event were:

* 2 members of the Transitional Federal Parliament of the Republic of Somalia Mrs. Faduma Abdullahi Insania and Sheikh Sahid Mohamed Yusuf
* Founders of Wake UP Somalia - two Somali-American teens Bashir Warsame and Sahnun Mohamud
* Number of Somali community leaders and activists including Abdihakim Faqi, Mohamed Ali, and Omar Abukar.



In addition, representatives from United States Committee for the United Nations Development Program spoke at the event and explained the program and sought support for the Somali Women's Scholarship Fund project.

The event’s MC Mr. Mumin Barre, President of Somali Diaspora Network gave tribute to the fallen Somali government officials and all the victims of the recent violence.

The goal of the event was to:

* Commemorate Somalia independence week
* Support peace, governance, and the Somali unity government
* Call for an end to the violence and radicalism
* Remember the fallen government officials and other victims of violence
* Call for immediate humanitarian assistance for the suffering Somalis who are mostly women and children.



The attendees sang Somali patriotic songs and expressed their emotions and solidarity through constant applauds. In addition, speeches included nationalistic poems and stories.

The attendees agreed to continue their commitment working toward peaceful and free Somalia. The next planned event is a demonstration against the renewed violence and radicalism in Somalia.

The event ended with networking and socialization among the attendees.
