Horror Films and What You May Not Have Realized About Them Horror movies have been around for a long time, and while they all go by that name, there are different types of horror movies that fit into that one category. The kind of horror movie that can be defined as it’s own thing, while still being considered a horror movie, has likely had at least one day in the sun, while oppositely has been almost forgotten for a certain period of time. In the very beginning of horror movies, they tended to be what is now considered monster movies, and they included now famous characters such as the Wolf Man, who appeared in a movie that went by the same name in 1941. Monster movies such as these would use different tactics to scare the audience as well, relying more on scares that were prolonged with the right atmosphere and the use of makeup and practical effects. If this era or horror movies has given the rest of the future filmmakers anything it is the characters that they created which have received other films such as spinoffs, remakes, etc. The next popular genre of movies that falls under the category of horror is the slasher movies which originally started in 1960 with Peeping Tom and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. The thing that makes the slasher subgenre different is that it was very periodic, with it’s introduction, peak, and resurrection all coming from different decades. It might also cross ones mind that if there was that space in time where the slasher genre had started, but not really taken off yet, then there must have been some form of horror movie that was popular. The subgenre of horror film that took advantage of the slasher’s little rest period was the supernatural horror movie, which birthed many classics such as The Exorcist in 1973 or Carrie in 1976. After that, the slasher film received it’s rise in popularity when John Carpenter released Halloween in 1978 which is considered the greatest slasher, and one of the greatest horror, movies of all time.

With the hope of striking lightening in a bottle more than a handful of times, slasher filmmakers (from what people thought at the time) overstayed their welcome. However, that offered the opportunity for one of the most game changing movies ever put on screen, which was successful due to pointing out the cliches that slasher movies tended to follow, while also being truly scary in it’s own way, and that movie is Scream (1996). The reason that many people don’t realize for why they love horror movies, and any kind of movie for that matter, is because there are so many different kinds of movies within each genre which come and go according to the culture each era brings. Why People Think Options Are A Good Idea
